Most rooms have one or two places where you would like a small light and there is no socket: the middle of a dining table, a windowsill, a bathroom shelf, the far end of a sofa. What to check before buying
Runtime, honestly stated. Battery life depends almost entirely on brightness. Ours runs roughly 6 to 20 hours per charge — 6 at full brightness, 20 at the low warm setting most people actually use in the evening. In practice that is a charge about once a week.
Colour temperature. One cool white setting is a work light, not a calm one. Look for a warm amber option; three tones is the useful spread — amber for evenings, soft white for reading, cool white for getting ready.
Dimming that goes low enough. Plenty of small lamps dim from bright to slightly less bright. The setting that matters is the bottom one, near candlelight.
Weight. A light plastic lamp slides around and tips. A weighted base is what makes it feel like an object rather than a gadget.
Where a normal lamp still wins
If you read for two hours every night in the same chair, plug something in. A rechargeable lamp is for ambient light and for places with no socket, not for lighting a whole room or a long reading session.
