Most people have seen a bad one: a plastic cylinder with a fixed orange bulb, the same brightness all evening, glowing like a night light. That is what "fake" looks like. A good flameless candle is a different object, and the differences are specific enough to check before you buy.
The three things that give a cheap one away
- A flame that doesn't move. A static LED reads as a lamp. What you want is a small flame element that physically swings, or at least a flicker with an irregular rhythm — real flames are never steady.
- The wrong colour of light. Cool white or bright yellow is the giveaway. Candlelight is warm amber, around 2000K, and dimmer than people expect.
- A shiny, seamed body. Real wax is matte and slightly uneven. A glossy moulded seam up the side is visible from two metres away.
What actually sells the illusion
Distance and grouping. One candle alone on a table invites inspection; three at different heights on a tray reads as a styled shelf and nobody looks closer. Put them where a real candle would be — a windowsill, a mantel, the middle of a dinner table — rather than where a lamp would be.
Keep them dim. If a flameless candle is the brightest thing in the room, it stops looking like a flame. It should be the warm thing you notice after the overhead light goes off.
Where they genuinely beat a real candle
- Near anything flammable. A December garland, a dry wreath, curtains, a tree. This is the whole reason they exist.
- Around kids and pets. Nothing to knock over, nothing to burn.
- In a window. You can leave them lit all evening and go out, which you cannot do with wax.
- On a timer. The good ones come on at the same time each evening on their own — the detail that makes people keep them out all season.
What they will not do
They give you no scent. If that is what you are after, warming a real jar candle from above with a candle warmer lamp gets you the fragrance and a soft light with no flame either — and the candle lasts longer than burning it.
What we sell, and which to pick
- Flameless LED candles, set of 3 — $24.99. Three graduated heights with a swinging flame element and a wax finish. The set for a tray, a shelf or a mantel.
- Flameless LED taper candles with remote, set of 6 — $29.99. Tall, slim, 28 cm, with a black wick and a repeating timer, so they come on every evening by themselves. Made for a candelabra, a dinner table or a window.
Both take batteries rather than a cable, so there is nothing to hide. Free shipping to 40 countries and 30 days to change your mind — and for December, order by the third week of November, since delivery usually takes 10–20 days after dispatch.
