The five-minute cooling face massage

Jade roller and gua sha set arranged with eucalyptus

Your face holds a day the way your shoulders do. By evening there's fluid sitting under the eyes, a clench along the jaw you didn't notice building, a general puffiness that no amount of sleep quite resolves on its own. A few minutes of cool weight and slow pressure moves it.

What each tool actually does

  • The jade roller is for lymph and product. Rolling outward and down, from the centre of the face toward the ears and neck, nudges fluid toward where your body drains it. It also presses a serum or oil into the skin instead of letting it sit on top.
  • The gua sha stone (the flat, heart-shaped piece in the same set) is for tension and definition. Held nearly flat against the skin and drawn along the jaw, cheekbone and brow with light pressure, it releases the muscles you hold without realising and leaves the face looking less tired.
  • The steel globes are for cold. Steel holds temperature far longer than stone, so straight from the fridge they stay properly cool for the whole massage — best first thing in the morning, when puffiness is at its worst and you want the skin to wake up.

The routine

Clean skin, then a few drops of facial oil so everything glides. Work one side of the face, then the other.

  1. Roll. Jade roller, three or four passes per area: forehead upward, cheeks from the nose out toward the ear, jaw from chin to earlobe, then down the side of the neck each time to clear it.
  2. Sculpt. Gua sha stone, light pressure: along the jawline from chin to ear, under the cheekbone from nose to hairline, and outward along the brow. Three to five slow strokes each, always ending toward the hairline or down the neck.
  3. Cool. Steel globes, one in each hand: press and glide over the whole face for a minute, lingering under the eyes and along the jaw. This is the part that takes the redness and swelling down.

Five minutes, start to finish. It's as much a way to stop for a moment as it is skincare.

Cold, and sometimes warm

Keep the roller and globes in the fridge, not the freezer — a couple of hours is enough, and the freezer makes stone brittle. The globes also work warm: rest them in a cup of hot (not boiling) water for a minute and use them the same way to help a night cream absorb. The jade set is a fridge-only tool.

Looking after them

Wipe the jade with a soft cloth and don't soak it; each piece of real stone is a little different in colour and marbling. The steel globes are non-porous — nothing to absorb product or hold bacteria — so a rinse and a dry is all they need, then back in their pouch.
