It is the question people ask right before they buy one: can you fall asleep with it running? For an ultrasonic diffuser — the kind that turns water into a cool mist, rather than heating oil — the answer is generally yes, with two caveats worth knowing.
What makes one safe to leave running
- Auto shut-off. This is the feature that matters. An ultrasonic diffuser should switch itself off when the water runs out, rather than running a dry ceramic plate all night. Ours does, and it also has 1, 3 and 6-hour timers so you can have it stop before morning.
- Cool mist, no flame. There is nothing hot and nothing burning — which is the real difference from a candle or an oil burner, and the reason a diffuser is the safer thing to leave near a bed.
- Low power. It runs from USB-C, so it draws about as much as charging a phone.
The two caveats
Ventilate the room. Scent that is pleasant for twenty minutes can be a headache after eight hours in a sealed room. Run it on a timer, or leave the door ajar. If you wake up with a dry throat, the mist is too much, not too little.
Pets and small children. Some essential oils — tea tree, eucalyptus, pine, citrus among them — are not safe around cats in particular, because they metabolise them differently. If you share a room with a pet, diffuse in a space they can leave, keep the concentration low, and check any oil against a vet's list before you use it overnight. Three to five drops is plenty in a 300 ml tank; more is not stronger, it just coats the tank.
Practical settings for sleeping
Fill to the line, three to five drops of something calm — lavender or cedarwood rather than peppermint, which is a daytime scent — set the 3-hour timer, and turn the light down to warm amber or off. The scent has done its job by the time you are asleep; the rest is habit, and your body starts reading it as the end of the day.
Cleaning, which people skip
Wipe the tank once a week with a little white vinegar and a soft cloth. Oil residue builds up on the ceramic disc and a coated disc makes less mist — nearly every "it stopped working" story is this.
The flame-effect diffuser we sell has the auto shut-off, the timers and a 300 ml tank, in white or black. Free shipping to 40 countries, and 30 days to send it back. If you would rather have scent without any electricity at all, there is the backflow incense burner — though that one does involve a lit cone, so it is not one to leave unattended.
