Secret Santa is a hard brief. You have twenty-odd dollars, a colleague you know well enough to say hello to and not much more, and a room full of people who will watch them open it. The safe options — a mug, novelty socks, a desk gadget — get a polite laugh and then live in a drawer.

If their flat is a bit bare

Two small rules that make any of these land better
Pick the thing they would use on a Tuesday, not the thing that is funny for ten seconds. The joke gift gets the bigger laugh in the room and the smaller life afterwards.
Write one line about why. "You said you never sleep — this one does not press on your eyes." It takes thirty seconds and it is the difference between a present and an object.
